On the way to Fredrikstad there are a number of viking sites along the road. We stopped at Begby to see some of these rock carvings.

Distribution and cultural environment
We find most of the great rock carvings in Østfold outside the Great Morraine, which extends from Jeløya by Moss to Halden. We only know of a very few sites in inner Østfold so far. While we also have rock carvings from the Stone Age (hunter's carvings) in other parts of Norway, which are about 7000 years old, all the rock carvings in Østfold belong to the cultural environment of the Bronze Age (about 1800 - 600 B.C.)
Sites with an abundance of picture
The rock carvings we find in Østfold are very similar to those we find in Bohuslän, Sweden. This can imply that there were close cultural connections between Østfold and Bohuslän during the Bronze Age. The sites can be described as being extremely abundant in pictures.Certain dissimilarities, within the same area, in the forms of the figures and the way they are carved suggest that they have been carved over a certain time span.
