Citizens to build the Chapala Yacht Club, which still operates under Mexican management. Shejetnan's intention was to turn Chapala into an important tourist center, with a resort and residential area with rental chalets and bungalows for snow birds and year-round visitors.
He had huge projects in mind, beginning with the railroad line and train station, which would shorten the traveling time from Mexico City to Chapala and from Guadalajara to Chapala. At that time, horse-drawn carriages took twelve hours to travel from Guadalajara to Chapala. When the first road was built, the travel time shortened to six hours. Shejetnan thought that instead of traveling from Mexico City to Guadalajara, and then driving six hours, he could bring the wealthy people from Mexico City directly to Chapala.

In 1920 he got permission to extend a railroad line from Atequiza, Jalisco to Chapala. Atequiza was an important town early in the century. Since Porfirio Diaz spent the night there on his way to Guadalajara, a theatre was built in 1900 for his amusement. It is the third most important theatre in the State of Jalisco, after the Degollado in Guadalajara, and the Rosas Moreno in Lagos de Moreno.

"The train ran daily... an engine, five red wagons with red velvet seats... carrying passengers morning and afternoon to and from Chapala and La Capilla, where connections could be made to Mexico City," says June Nay Summers' in her book. The train station was built by a civil engineer, Mr. de Alba in the 20s. In 1925 Lake Chapala rose a full meter and flooded the station. The train operated for only a short time - not only because of the flood, but because a paved road was built from Guadalajara to Chapala through Ixtlahuacan, which shortened the driving time to three hours. In 1926 railroad operations ceased.

Mr. Shejetnan had planned to build a five-star hotel next to the railway station, so that tourists could be entertained and toured around on a ship he later built. However the hotel was never constructed. The large resort never got out of the planning stage. Only the small golf course next to the RR station in what is today El Parque de la Cristiandad (the park next to the Red Cross building) operated for a while.

The ship however, El Vikingo, with two levels, became a reality at the same time the train was operating. Unfortunately, the three projects: the railroad, the train station, and the ship failed and Shejetnan went bankrupt. The banks took over all of his real estate properties, including the railway station and the ship. The ship was abandoned and left to rot in the lake. The train station was also abandoned for a few years and taken over by squatters until Don Ricardo Aguilar, owner of El Manglar in the 20s, bought the building.

In the late forties Don Jesus Gonzalez Gallo bought the railway from Aguilar. Gonzalez Gallo allowed the building to be used for theatre productions of relatively short duration. The Lakeside Little Theatre held their first production in the railway station on August 14, 1965, a musical written and directed by Betty Kuzell entitled: "From Kokomo to Mexico." Art exhibits and other ventures were also held there. Unfortunately, the former governor and owner of the railway station was killed in an accident and the building became a nesting spot for Chapala's poor and their donkeys, goats, and pigs.

The mountain range that surrounds Lake Chapala makes it seem a world away from Guadalajara, offering a welcome contrast to the bustle of the big city. Buses run every 30 minutes from el Centro (downtown Guadalajara) to Chapala. Historically there has been a connection from Guadalajara to Ajijic as a weekend retreat. Affluent families from Guadalajara and Mexico City have come to play on the shores of Lake Chapala for well over 100 years.

Ski enthusiasts from the whole world visit Morgedal, the village which is internationally known as the cradle of modern ski sport. To experience the history of skiing you should use the Norwegian Ski Museum as a starting point. Having visited the museum you will understand the importance of Morgedal Hereos: Sondre Norheim, Torjus and Mikkel Hemmestveit and Olav Bjaaland in the world of ski sport.

The starting point for any visit to Morgedal, this is a striking building which houses a multimedia journey through skiing's history with special attention paid to the skiing revolution which developed out from Morgedal in the 1850's. You can explore the museum on your own but a guide is highly recommended. Displays inside the museum include a big screen pre-show depicting the development of skiing over the last 4000 years, Morgedal in the 1850s, a ski making workshop, First to the south pole, Norway's first ski wax factory, Olympic flame history and displays and a wide format, 3 screen telemark ski film that will give you the urge to strap on some skis! Elsewhere in the building you will find Innsving Kafé which has an exciting menu often making use of the large stone oven and locally produced food.

There is also a large souvenir shop which has an excellent range of gifts and distinctive Norwegian products. It is here you will find information about what to do while you are in Morgedal and helpful and friendly guides who are keen to help you experience the best of Morgedal. A free internet service is also available for travellers keen to check in with those back home.

Outside the building the Olympic flame is burning still out on the lake. The flame was lit for the first time here in Morgedal for the Oslo winter games in 1952. It was lit here again for the Squaw Valley and Lillehammer Winter Olympics in 1960 and 1994 respectively.

From the museum it is possible to walk up to Øverbø - the birthplace of Sondre Norheim. A nature trail and quiet roads lead you up to this beautiful spot high above Morgedal. An open air museum - Øvebø has been visited by thousands of ski enthusiasts who have made the pilgrimage to the birthplace of the "father of modern skiing". Guided walks are available for groups who want to uncover some of the stories about this charismatic figure who changed the way the world would ski.

Distribution and cultural environment
We find most of the great rock carvings in Østfold outside the Great Morraine, which extends from Jeløya by Moss to Halden. We only know of a very few sites in inner Østfold so far. While we also have rock carvings from the Stone Age (hunter's carvings) in other parts of Norway, which are about 7000 years old, all the rock carvings in Østfold belong to the cultural environment of the Bronze Age (about 1800 - 600 B.C.)

Sites with an abundance of picture
The rock carvings we find in Østfold are very similar to those we find in Bohuslän, Sweden. This can imply that there were close cultural connections between Østfold and Bohuslän during the Bronze Age. The sites can be described as being extremely abundant in pictures.Certain dissimilarities, within the same area, in the forms of the figures and the way they are carved suggest that they have been carved over a certain time span.]]> On the way to Fredrikstad there are a number of viking sites along the road. On 15th June 1999 the National Assembly (Stortinget) approved the building of a new opera house in Oslo. In 2000, Norwegian architect firm Snøhetta was chosen as winner of the anonymous architectural competition. Groundworks began in 2003, with Statsbygg as the property manager. On 12 April 2008 the new opera house opened with a gala performance. The inaugural season runs from April 2008 to June 2009.

The Norwegian Armed Forces Aircraft Collection offers the public, regardless of age, insight into the cost and sacrifices of securing peace and freedom during Norway's modern history.

The Aircraft Collection, owned by the Norwegian Armed Forces, has been broght together and restored over a long period of time. The work has mainly been undertaken by groups of voluntees enthusiasts. The Armed Forces Museum directs the restoration work and is responsible for maintance of the Collection. A volunteer foundation, The Military Historical Forum of Eastern Norway, is responsible for the public display and other services provided.

The Collection's Northrop N-3PB is the sole remaining of 24 built. These aircrafts were ordered by the Norwegian Naval Air Force in March 1940 and delivered in early 1941. The first six went to the Norwegian training camp in Canada, the remaining 18 to NO. 330 (Norwegian) Squadron at Iceland. No. 330 Squadron was the first active Norwegian unit in the RAF during World War II, serving on patrol duties over the North Atlantic.

The Winterpark received the prestigious Scandinavian Travel Award for the most innovative Nordic Tourism Product in 2007.

Scandinavias southernmost Ice Hotel
The Ice Hotel will have capacity for up to 40 guests, and offer overnight stay for individuals when the Winterpark is open. The High Ropes Course is a real challenge! Pass bridges and other challenges up to 14 meters above ground.

Every evening ends with a spectacular firework around the big troll.

The Winterpark offers severalk souvenir shophs, which offers trolls, books and Scandinavian design products. Even clothing and technical equipment from Bergans. Cozy place where we serve warm drinks and snacks, stew and warm soups.

Trollsalen Restaurant
In the Fairytale Grotto, you will find a very special restaurant with and unique atmosphere, just like you are in a fairytale yourself. With lit candles, an open fireplace and six huge trolls holding the ceiling, it is among the most extraordinary restaurants in Norway. Local delicacies are on the menu. Also available for group arrangements.

The Open-Air Museum sets the scene for entertaining activities all year. It is great for families to walk from building to building to learn about their different uses, how many people lived there, and how they managed the daily life and rutines.
Summer activities
During the summer season, the museum offers great experiences to visitors of all ages. Staff members dressed in traditional folk dress welcome you!
Artisans in the Old Town
June 1 to August 31: The pottery, weavers, silversmith and candle factory open their workshops ans sell hand crafted products.
Christmas Fair
At the Christmas fair you can experience: Historical houses decorated for Christmas; market selling handmade products, arts and crafts, ornaments, speciality foods and holiday treats; family programs featuring concerts, folk dance, choir; Santa's Workshop; service in a stave church from the 12th century. The Christmas Fair 2007: December 1, 2, 8, and 9, 11 - 16.

Animals and attractions
The park's main attractions are 5 bears and 3 moose. The enclosure of bears is about 40.000 square meeters and that of the moose is 30.000 square meeters, so they roam about fairly freely.

Location
The park is situatet about 140 km north west of Oslo. This will normally take about 2 - 2,5 hours to drive along RV 7.

National responsability
The Norwegian Forest Museum has a national responsability for presenting the history of hunting, trapping, fishing, forestry and forest industry. With more than 100.000 visitors to the museum anually, the museum is one of the largest in all of Norway. The Klevfoss Industrial Museum at Løten and the Sørlistøa Fløtermuseum at Osen are owned by the same foundation running the Norwegian Forest Museum.

The Forest in Focus
The entire ground floor of the museum houses our new exhibition Forest in Focus. Norwegian forest history is presented by way of images, light, sound, scenes and objects. You will learn how the forest in Norway has developed since the last Ice Age, and the major role modern evergreen forests play in ensuring the world's ecological balance. Did you know that Norway was a leading exporter of timber already in the 1500s?

The Hunter's Kingdom
The Hunter's Kingdom presents individual animal species and the history of hunting. The exhibition covers deer, small and large predators, rodents and Norwegian bird species. The Hunter's Kingdom is the only exhibition in any Norwegian museum offering a comprehensive presentation of Norwegian hunting and trapping traditions.

From mountain to coast
The aquarium From mountain to coast is the only aquarium in Norway focused promarily on the fresh water fish. What about trout and char in a mountain lake, grayling in a deep brook pool, pike and perch in a forest pond or lowland lake, or salmon, sea trout and flounder at the river mouth? What about some salt water species? We have some of them as well.

The Brook Workshop
The Brook Workshop with fresh running water is the perfect area for children to play and experiment. Find out how streams and rivers form sand and gravel banks, build dams and balance on stones in the running water. Experience how the water's tremendous power shapes out landscape. The Brook Workshop has been built by the Norwegian Water Resources and Energy Administration (NVE) in collaboration with the Norwegian Forest Museum. The Brook Workshop and the play area Skogkanten are perfect sites for children to learn by playing.

Botanical Gardens
Hardy species of rhododendron, ancient and modern species of roses, lilies, rock garden perennials, as well as other perennials, are on display at the Botanical Gardens. Oldemors Hage (Grandmothers' garden) features plants and early 20th century garden settings, and was designed and planted by Elverum Hagelag. The museum also has a arboretum featuring approx. 70 species of forest trees.

The souvenirshop at the museum is one of the leading museum shops in NOrway, with a varied and wide selection of quality products and souvenirs. THe museum shop features arts and handicraft within the museum's fields of expertise. The range of products is wide, ranging from beautiful glassware, jewellery and clothes to bentwood boxes, knives and wooden toys. We welcom all visitors to a fun shopping experience in a charming setting.
